DRIVEN MAD

John Cooper MP has expressed concern at the length of time learner drivers are having to wait to book a driving test.

In response to a series of parliamentary questions lodged by the local MP, it has been revealed that the average waiting time for a practical driving test at the Dumfries Driving Test Centre is currently 15.5 weeks. The answer also confirmed that the Dumfries centre is operating at full capacity.

The issue of driving test waiting times has been raised with Mr Cooper by many constituents across the region. It is a growing concern and part of a wider problem experienced nationwide.

Earlier this month, the UK Government announced a series of actions to address the long delays, including changes to the booking service so that only learner drivers can book and manage their tests - a move intended to prevent third parties from reselling slots. Ministers have also confirmed that recruitment of new examiners is continuing. The Department for Transport informed Mr Cooper that during this year, three new driving examiners have been recruited for the Carlisle Test Centre, which will provide additional capacity to support the Dumfries area.

John Cooper MP said:

It is incredibly frustrating for learner drivers to have to wait weeks for a driving test and while I welcome the action that has been taken, time will tell whether these measures are successful in bringing down the waiting times.

The fact is that driving is not a luxury in rural areas like Dumfries and Galloway, it is a necessity. The focus needs to be on ensuring that learner drivers, particularly young people, in rural communities are able to access tests without having to wait for weeks on end.

I have been contacted by many constituents on this matter and will continue to follow the issue closely.
